Sally writes about how she uses art to tell…
November 2024
In her latest article for The Artist Magazine (January 2025 edition, published November 2024), Sally describes the story behind a recent series of narrative paintings, “Hospital Days”, which evolved from many sketches undertaken of her son while he received treatment for a chronic illness in Chelsea and Westminster hospital. The personal story also references the tangible impacts of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital’s art collection on her son’s health. The art collection belongs to the hospital’s official charity CW+ . The CW+ Art in Health programme has built a robust body of evidence to demonstrate the positive impact of outstanding design and engagement with the arts on health and wellbeing. As part of this work and to support fundraising efforts, the charity has made a film about Sally’s experiences.
The first painting in the “Hospital Days series” was one of only around 100 paintings selected from 3500 entrants for this year’s Royal Society of Portrait Painters’ annual exhibition at The Mall Galleries in London in 2024. The third painting was exhibited at The Royal Institute of Oil Painters’ annual exhibition also at the Mall Galleries.
